If you have a Whole Foods near you and either have had cooking classes or would like to, sign up! One of my favorite things about Whole Foods is that they support local small business by offering products that are made right within your area. They provide classes that are demonstration only, skill set, and hand’s on as well as kid’s camps for summer. Personally I prefer the hand’s on and try to sign up for at least two per year. The cuisine and subject matter can vary per location, but the class fee is minimal and oh so worth it!
Hand’s on classes begin with an introduction from your instructor/chef and a briefing of each dish that will be prepared. Depending on the nature of the menu, you may even be jazzed with a little romancing of the history on what you are creating. Then you wash up, split into teams and start the process. We always end up having a nice mix of different level of expertise on our team. So you actually learn from one another and get to share stories from your own kitchen. Their test kitchen is ample in space and equipment, so someone always has a part to play. After an hour or so we got a break to have a glass of wine while everything is in the oven.
The aroma of all you worked together on fills the room and a minimal amount of mingling takes place, maybe a second glass of wine poured. Then it is time for the plates to be plated and take a seat. This is where it takes a fun twist. You actually end up trying the opposite team’s dishes although they are the same as yours. It really goes to show how flavors can change with the ever so slightest spice missing ( because they forgot) or too much of a flavor introduced. It truly is an experience, and I will add… wether introvert or extrovert, it works! Signing up for a class to celebrate a best friend’s birthday, date night, or just as a gift to one you love to spend time with is a wonderful idea!
You absolutely will not regret trying a class at your local Salud Cooking School, hosted by Whole Foods. What are you waiting for… go look at their calendar now!
